General permanent makeup questions

What is permanent makeup?

Permanent makeup or PMU is the insertion of pigments into the dermis. This is done with a pen into which a needle/hygiene module is inserted. Permanent makeup resembles tattooing in technique, but the purpose is slightly different. In a subtle and very natural way, we apply pigments in the upper layer of the dermis or Stratum Basal.

Can PMU be applied to anyone?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to apply PMU to everyone. Therefore, it is important to indicate in advance if you have any skin conditions. Then we can tell you whether or not you can be treated.

We do not apply PMU in the following areas:

  • In places where you have had plastic surgery or radiation in the past year
  • On a scar that is less than a year old
  • in a spot tattooed less than six weeks ago
  • In an area where a tattoo was lasered away less than three months ago or where the laser wound has not yet healed
  • On irritated skin such as bumps, dark birthmarks, wine stains or swelling.
Are you diabetic?

With diabetes (diabetes), PMU is not recommended in some cases because of inferior wound healing. This can cause color differences in the pigment and the result is not beautiful. However, not all patients have poor wound healing. So in most patients it is not a problem provided they follow the prescribed aftercare.

How long does the treatment last?

The first treatment lasts on average between 1.5 – 2 hours. The treatment consists of:

  1. Discuss wishes and possibilities,
  2. omens
  3. color choice
  4. the treatment itself.

Is post-treatment necessary?

For beautiful results, a post-treatment is recommended. The pigment introduced into the skin during the first treatment loses 30 – 40% of its color after about 1 month. Therefore, it is important to come for a second time.

In some cases, the skin may not absorb well and a second treatment may also be necessary. In exceptional cases, a third treatment may be necessary.

How quickly does permanent makeup fade?

Permanent makeup lasts about 1.5 – 2 years. Over time, the PMU will fade. A touch up is then advised. Check the permanent make up price page for more information.

What to do after the permanent make up treatment?

After treatment you will receive information about the aftercare. It contains advice on how best to care for your eyebrows but also what not to do after treatment. It is especially important to carefully carry out the instructions you receive after treatment.

How painful is permanent makeup?

The treatment is not completely painless for everyone. Often the sensation of epilating is perceived as more painful. If it does become painful, the skin can be numbed. Often it is not necessary.

I am pregnant or breastfeeding. May I be treated?

Do not get a tattoo if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Not all risks surrounding tattooing for pregnant women are known. Additionally, should you get an infection as a result of the tattoo, you should not take certain anti-infection medications because of the risk to your (unborn) child.

I have botox, can I be treated?

You may be treated if you have had the botox treatment 4 weeks ago. We recommend taking PMU first.

What should I avoid after treatment?

Avoid sauna, tanning bed and direct sunlight for 2 – 3 weeks. We also recommend not applying makeup for 7 days after treatment.

Although PMU removal should not be painful, each individual’s sensitivity may vary and there may be some irritation or sensitivity during or after treatment. It is also important to remember that the duration and intensity of treatment depend on several factors, including the size and color of the PMU and the depth of the ink in the skin.
